The Detroit Tigers tried to transition their rebuild into contention two years ago when they signed Eduardo Rodriguez and Javier Baez to big-time, long-term deals.

However, we all know how that’s worked out, with the team switching general managers and the team failing to sniff the possibility of the postseason.

Now, it’s time to tear it down (slightly) and rebuild anew, potential looking something like this hopeful 2024 lineup.

But what will that look like? Let’s try to figure it out by targeting who WON’T be around next season.

7 Tigers Who Won’t Return in 2024

There’s turnover from year-to-year for each MLB team, and some moves are more obvious than others.

Of course, it’s impossible to know exactly who might replace these guys, but at least we can have an idea of holes on the roster that need addressing.

Let’s get into it, starting with the biggest names due to depart.

1. Miguel Cabrera, DH

Let’s start with the obvious. One of the greatest players in franchise history retired this offseason, but memories aside, that’s GREAT news for the future of this team.

Cabrera has been making $30+ million per season since 2018. While he certainly earned that money for the first part of his career, he definitely didn’t live up to his salary the last few years.

When you consider the value for that $30 million per year – a designated hitter who combined for just nine home runs over the past TWO seasons – it’s hard to see how the Tigers don’t get better by subtraction here.

The Tigers will now have some financial flexibility as they look to address areas of concern in free agency and at the MLB Winter Meetings.

But we all knew Cabrera wouldn’t be back next season. Let’s discuss some players whose status is more up-in-the-air.
