The Lions’ secondary was exposed in a Week 7 loss to the Ravens, but the defense has been otherwise impressive during a 6-2 start.

Yet oddsmakers are setting the total points for this week’s game against the LA Chargers at 48.5 points, with Detroit favored by just 1.5 points – implying a tightly contested shootout.

Let’s dig into what these opening odds mean, and how we can find value backing our Lions (and win $200 in bonus bets at DraftKings).

Lions vs. Chargers Week 10 Opening Odds

Detroit is a favorite for a seventh time in nine games this season as oddsmakers have caught on to the team’s success.

But this is also the second-highest point total for a Lions game all season – second to a Week 1 total points projection of 52.5 vs. Kansas City.

Of course, that makes plenty of sense when you also consider that the LOWEST point total for a Chargers game this season has been 45.5 points against the Titans.

Los Angeles has allowed 24 points per game (23rd in NFL), while the Lions have allowed 20.6 points per game (14th in NFL).

These two offenses are also top-10 in the NFL for scoring, with the Lions (25 points per game) JUST ahead of the Chargers (24.9 points per game).

That makes plenty of sense for the point total, but that doesn’t help explain the 1.5-point spread.

Even with the Lions on the road (assumed 3-point swing to the home team), Detroit is in a strong position to cover the spread, especially when you consider that Frank Ragnow, Jonah Jackson and David Montgomery each returned to practice this week after missing Week 8.

Detroit is 5-1 covering the spread as a favorite this season, including a 2-0 record as road favorites.

LA, on the other hand, has covered the spread just twice in seven tries and is just 1-3 straight up against teams with a winning record this season (one win over Minnesota).
