Lions coach Dan Campbell has quickly become one of the most likable coaches in the NFL and it’s hard not to be entertained by his aggressive play-calling.

Campbell has become known for going for it on fourth down in an effort to step on an opponent’s throat, and that’s exactly what Detroit did by picking up a 4th and 2 conversion to set up the game-winning field goal against LA this past Sunday.

Don’t expect that aggressive play-style to change anytime soon, especially after making some colorful comments about it on Tuesday, saying he tells his family to ‘wear a diaper’ when watching games.

Campbell Comments on Fourth Down Play-Calling

The Lions are tied with the Giants for the NFL lead with 22 fourth down attempts, further illustrating how impactful Campbell’s coaching has been.

“I had a feeling going into that game that we needed to be aggressive and I loved our matchup offensively,” Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket on Tuesday. “I just knew our guys would respond. Certainly in that moment it felt like the right thing to do.

“Here’s what I would say because I tell my family this,” Campbell continued. “Just wear a diaper before some of these games. I’ll give them an alert and say ‘Put them on and be ready to roll.’

Detroit has converted 12 of those 22 fourth-down attempts – second only to the Eagles and their now-infamous ‘brotherly shove.’

There were two such instances of this on Sunday that were particularly impressive.

Faced with a 4th and 5 at the LA 28-yard-line, the Lions ran David Montgomery for six yards to pick up a risky first down. Though the drive would end with a turnover on downs, it sent a message and helped set the tone.

Of course, the 4th and 2 pass from Jared Goff to Sam LaPorta to set up the game-winning field goal was wildly encouraging as well. Sometimes the difference between winning and losing comes down to one play, and Campbell believes in his players enough to at least give them the chance to make it.
