The fantasy football world has been up in arms all season about the limited usage of Jahmyr Gibbs in the Lions offense.

But David Montgomery sure is making it difficult for fans to direct that vitriol his way. The veteran running back has been everything Detroit fans could have hoped for and more – including ways that can’t be tracked on the stat sheet.

Gibbs revealed that Montgomery took himself out of a 4th and Goal situation this past week to give the rookie a chance to score, and Gibbs pulled it off with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Let’s examine why this is actually much more important than either of their efforts on the field.

Gibbs Reveals Montgomery Stepped Aside for TD Run

Montgomery and Gibbs were a lethal combination against LA this past week as the two combined for 228 yards and 3 TDs on just 29 total touches.

But the leadership of Montgomery has been commendable.

Not only has the veteran set the tone and shouldered the load, but he also showed that he can be unselfish and an encouraging leader this past week, too.

“I was supposed to come out, then David came out and got me,” Gibbs said on the 33rd Team Podcast this week. “Then he was like, ‘Jah, you want it?’ I was thinking, I was like, ‘Yeah, let me get it.’ So he ran out and let me get it.”

Some players like Montgomery might feel threatened by the presence of a promising rookie like Gibbs, but there’s clearly no bad blood here.

And that’s a GREAT sign of the culture of teamwork that head coach Dan Campbell has established in Detroit.

There’s no doubt that both of these players will be needed for a postseason push, and you just love to see Gibbs not only gaining confidence, but also trusting Montgomery to lead the way.
