Could the Pistons Have the Longest Losing Streak in NBA History?

Am I the only Pistons fan who can’t take it anymore?

Some of my first memories of Detroit basketball are of the Pistons beating the Kobe & Shaq Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals, but those days have been LONG in the past.

These days, Detroit picks among the top 10 teams annually in the NBA Draft, and it ALREADY looks like that trend is going to continue. Not only that, but Detroit is on pace to have one of the worst seasons in NBA history.

Let’s break down how ugly this could get (and cash in on their losing woes at FanDuel).

Pistons Riding 12-game Losing Streak

This season is already over, and if you think it’s not, you’re one of the most die-hard Detroit fans out there.

So, let’s have a little fun with the misery.

Can Detroit have one of the worst seasons in NBA history? Certainly!

The Pistons have lost 12 games in a row, and would have to lose 15 more games without winning to set the record for most consecutive losses in an NBA season – the 2010-11 Cavs and 2013-14 Sixers each lost 26 straight games.

So we’ll have to wait at least a couple of weeks before worrying about that. But there’s several other marks this team could hit, too.

Ranked by winning percentage, the 2023-24 Pistons are currently on pace to have the fourth worst record of ALL-TIME! The only teams worse than them are the 2012 Charlotte Bobcats (7-59), the 1973 Sixers (9-73) and the 2016 Sixers (10-72).

As far as team history goes, their current .133 winning percentage would be the worst of all-time. The worst for a full season is when the Pistons went 16-66 in 1980 (.195 winning percentage).

But it’s not very likely the Pistons are THAT bad.

Detroit has a -6.4 point differential this season, which definitely isn’t good, but it’s also better than four other teams. And the team has dealt with significant injury losses, too, including Bojan Bogdanovic, Jalen Duren and Joe Harris.

There’s a good chance this season can only get better from here, but I’m here to tell you that’s definitely NOT guaranteed.

Here’s to better days, fellow Pistons fans.
