It’s been challenging to be a Detroit sports fan over the past decade, but times are turning around a bit lately (at least for the Lions and Wolverines).

But the same cannot be said about the Pistons, who will keep setting the franchise record for longest losing streak until they win again (currently at 17 straight losses).

Detroit sports media got creative with emphasizing the Pistons’ woes this week, with several people pointing out that the Lions (10-3) actually have MORE wins than the Pistons (9-53) in this calendar year.

It’s really bad for the Pistons, but is it historically bad? Let’s break it down.

2023-24 Pistons One of the Worst Detroit Teams Ever?

It’s HARD to be one of the worst teams in Detroit sports history.

We have the infamous 0-16 Lions season in 2008, a 43-119 season by the Tigers in 2003, and even a 16-66 record by the Pistons in 1979-80.

It’s seemingly impossible to be worse than that winless Lions season, but when you consider how many games are played in the NBA, this year’s Pistons could come close.

Detroit did not win a single game in November and has the WORST record in the NBA at 2-17 with a .105 winning percentage that would be worse than any team in Detroit sports history except the 2008 Lions.

That’s astoundingly bad, and it gets even worse when you look at the bigger picture. At least the 2007 Lions went 7-9, and eventually got back into form with a 10-6 season in 2011.

The Pistons, on the other hand, went 17-65 last season (second-worst winning percentage in franchise history), and there’s no end in sight unless they nail their upcoming draft picks and several players improve.

It’s a sad state of affairs for a once-proud franchise that went to the NBA Finals in ‘04 and ‘05. At this point, fans’ best bet might just be to root for more losses in the hope that it brings about some much-needed change.
