3 Lions on the Chopping Block After Ben Johnson's Departure
By Cem Yolbulan
TE Brock Wright
Wright is a good developmental story for the Lions. Initially signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft, Wright showed intriguing flashes in the first two seasons of his career in Detroit.
He had a solid sophomore campaign, appearing in every game, starting in 10, and putting up 216 yards and four touchdowns. Emerging as a solid end-zone target, Wright had a few big moments.
His play was rewarded with an offer sheet by the 49ers when he was a restricted free agent in the 2024 offseason. The Lions matched the offer worth three years, $12 million and retained Wright.
Since then, however, Wright wasn't able to take the necessary next step forward. He was reliable once again and played every game and over 50% of offensive snaps. Yet, he failed to make as big of an impact as it's expected of him considering his role.
Per Pro Football Focus, Wright ranked 65th among 75 qualified tight ends with a 52.0 grade. His 57.7 pass block grade and 51.8 run block grade were equally disappointing for a player whose main job is blocking. Plus, he had a total of 100 yards and two touchdowns in the passing game.
This production is easily replaceable for the Lions. Wright is under contract for two more seasons, and Detroit would have $2.8 million on their books if they were to cut him in the offseason. Whether it's by cutting or trading him, Wright and the Lions would be better off with a split in the offseason.
