3. Jameson Williams, wide receiver
There are rumors running rampant these days that the Detroit Lions could potentially consider trading Jameson Williams, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. To say the Lions haven't gotten a proper return on investment from the Williams selection would be an understatement, and they might kick themselves for trading him.
But with that in mind, it could make some sense to do that.
Teams have until early May to make decisions on whether or not they want to pick up 5th-year options on rookie contracts from their 2022 NFL Draft class, and that option is expected to land somewhere around $15.5 million, fully guaranteed. Do the Lions want to fully guarantee that much money to a player who missed such a significant portion of his rookie year due to injury, then more time due to suspension the following year?
Like I said, to say the Lions haven't gotten their money's worth out of the Williams pick at this point would be a massive understatement. He doesn't even have one year with 100 targets yet as a former first-round receiver.
Detroit is likely going to ride this one out, but if some team makes them an offer they can't refuse, they might be willing to part ways with him. Especially if they have a shot at someone like Matthew Golden or Emeka Egbuka, maybe even a falling Tetairoa McMillan, this has a chance to actually happen.
The Lions are getting to the point of having to make substantial financial investments in a player who has not been the most reliable, and they have a chance to "sell high" after Williams racked up over 1,000 yards and 17.3 yards per reception last season.
