6 Lions Immediately on Thin Ice to Begin 2025 Offseason
By Cem Yolbulan
QB Jared Goff
The Lions coaching staff and Goff's teammates have expressed their full support for the talented quarterback after the disappointing loss to the Commanders. Goff struggled immensely against Washington, turning the ball over four times. In a game where your defense can't get any stops, Goff throwing three picks and losing a fumble was too costly.
The organization having Goff's back is the right thing to do. Dan Campbell and the players have been saying all the right things so far but that doesn't mean that Goff's job is 100% safe heading into the 2025 season.
Goff signed a four-year, $212 million contract extension, with $170 million guaranteed in the 2024 offseason. This deal will keep Goff in Detroit through the 2027 season, with an option for 2028.
This means that Goff gets paid like an elite quarterback but hasn't performed at an elite QB level in the playoffs during his Lions tenure.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has done an excellent job getting the most out of Goff despite his limitations. It shouldn't be forgotten that Goff was the QB for the best offense in the league all season, finishing with a 72.4% completion rate, 37 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Now that Johnson is likely leaving in the offseason, however, Goff may struggle to maintain his production under a new system. Goff will continue to be the QB1 when next season comes around but the Lions could seriously consider bringing in a high-level backup to compete with the 30-year-old signal-caller if things start going south.
