The Detroit Lions should be quite active in free agency next week, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions have multiple key defenders that they would like to re-sign, and they’ll also be looking to bolster their depth in the secondary and defensive line.
However, it won’t be a simple task for the Lions, as they’ll have to fend off other teams, including the New York Jets (who are coached by Aaron Glenn). The Jets have reportedly been linked to Lions LB Alex Anzalone, and they’re seemingly fit for Al-Quadin Muhammad after trading away Jermaine Johnson.
In addition to those two guys, the former Lions defensive coordinator could try to poach ex-Lion Ifeatu Melifonwu, who is scheduled to become a free agent, and would be a perfect depth option for Detroit with their injuries at safety. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic mentioned that Melifonwu is among the former Lions that Glenn could poach in free agency.
Rosenblatt also highlighted how Melifonwu has ties to a couple of Dolphins defensive coaches in Brian Duker and Ryan Slowik, who are now on Glenn’s staff in New York.
Jets Could Deny Lions Chance to Reunite with Ifeatu Melifonwu in Free Agency
Based on all that information, the Lions' chances to pull off a reunion with Melifonwu might be in jeopardy, especially if he gets more playing time in New York.Â
The 26-year-old Melifonwu started in eight games (career-high) this past season in Miami after signing a one-year, $3.01 million deal. Despite not having high expectations, Melifonwu played well in coverage.
According to Pro Football Focus, the ex-Lion only gave up 167 receiving yards and three TDs on 19 receptions. He also recorded a 63.5 coverage grade and a 57.5 run defense grade, which aren’t anything to write home about.
However, for a player who struggled to stay healthy during his tenure in Detroit, it was good to see him healthy and being able to showcase his versatility. That said, the Lions could use another defensive back who can play cornerback and safety, with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph both dealing with their respective injuries.
The Lions still have Thomas Harper under contract, which will help with their safety concerns. And the hope is to re-sign Avonte Maddox, who is a nickelback, and played a ton of safety once Branch went down.
If Detroit can re-sign Maddox, plus bring back Melifonwu, its safety depth will be in tremendous shape next season. However, the Lions have to hope that Glenn and the Jets don’t spoil their idea in the coming weeks.
