The Detroit Lions brought their sixth-round selection, Ahmed Hassanein, back to the practice squad earlier in the week. The rookie defensive end was let go by the Lions with an injury settlement in late August after he suffered a pectoral tear in the preseason. Once he was healthy again, though, Detroit signed him. It turns out, Hassanein's return to the Motor City almost didn't happen if it weren't for his loyalty to the franchise.

Hassanein became a fan favorite immediately after his selection in the 2025 NFL draft. Not only did he win the fans over by claiming that he would "die on the field" for Dan Campbell, but he was also impactful as a pass rusher in the preseason. Some fans thought that the former Boise State standout could make a difference right away at a position of need for the Lions.

Ahmed Hassanein Chose the Lions Over All 31 Teams

Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network revealed the extent of Hassanein's loyalty. According to Hassanein and his agent, all 31 teams inquired about the rookie defender once he was ready to return to action after his seven-week injury settlement. Some were even willing to offer him a spot on the 53-man roster. Since he qualifies as an international player due to his Egyptian heritage, Hassanein does not count towards teams' 16-man practice squad limit, making him a very appealing option.

However, the 23-year-old defender told his agent to "reject outside interest," and said he was never going anywhere else, adding, "I want to stay here, because these people believe in me, and I’m going to give it all I’ve got.’ Because loyalty is a big thing for me, I’m honored."

This speaks volumes to the team culture Dan Campbell has built in Detroit over the years. Once a franchise that players rarely wanted to suit up for, the Lions have recently become an organization where promising young players are willing to jeopardize their careers to be a part of.

Hassanein has been practicing with the team this week and is waiting for his turn to make his NFL debut. The Lions' pass rush has been exceeding expectations all season, but Josh Paschal and Marcus Davenport remain sidelined. Aidan Hutchinson was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, but his availability is not yet in question. If there are any more absences in the pass rush rotation, Hassanein should be the next man up, desperately hoping to prove his worth to the organization.
