The Detroit Lions' 2026 draft class is in the books, with fan attention now turning to undrafted signings and what potential fits could be a threat to make a surprise run. Near the top of the list has to be defensive lineman Aidan Keanaaina, who signed a deal with $267,500 in guarantees that suggests a great deal of belief from the Detroit front office. This level of investment suggests that the Lions view the defender as a potential practice squad piece or even a surprise reserve on the final roster.

Detroit has limited defensive tackle depth with Tyleik Williams and Alim McNeill as the current starters, and everything after this duo remains a clear question mark. The door is clearly open for Keanaaina to make a run throughout the summer and into the preseason that forces the Lions to include the defender on the active roster. The contract handed to the interior defender only furthers this possibility.

For Keanaaina, the obvious flaw in the defender's game that caused his fall out of the draft is concerns with the lack of interior pass-rushing production. Still, the lineman's 6'3" 320-pound frame clearly lends the physical tools needed to develop this at the next level.

The Cal product offers the needed size and motor to be a contributor on the inside if the Lions can help develop the defender over the next few months, leading into training camp. This, along with the clear lack of established defensive line depth, makes the prospect an incredibly notable addition and a player to keep an eye on.

Lions Clearly Handing Aidan Keanaaina a Path to Becoming a Surprise Contributor

It is telling that the level of guarantees the Lions handed the interior defender is at the top of their current reported undrafted free agent contracts. Detroit isn't making this level of investment unless there is a clear belief that draft stock can be defied and that Keanaaina can find his way onto the Detroit roster.

Even if the Lions don't opt to put the defender on the team's first 53-man roster, it would be surprising not to see him stick around as a practice squad piece. While the path remains open to the active roster, it is always an uphill battle for an undrafted player to make the team based simply on a higher investment level into other pieces.

With that said, the contract the Lions offered the lineman, along with the clear development upside, leaves Keanaaina as one of the more exciting offseason underdog stories for fans to keep an eye on. Having the defender make the roster as the final defensive line piece wouldn't be a shock and sets up what should be an entertaining position battle throughout camp and into the preseason.
