The Detroit Lions generated headlines before they even took a snap in Week 1 as they came to an agreement with wide receiver Jameson Williams on a three-year extension worth up to $83 million on Saturday night.
The deal keeps Williams in Detroit through the 2029 season and keeps the Lions’ talented receiving duo intact with Amon-Ra St. Brown. While deals like this could have some of the teammates checking their own bank accounts, it doesn’t seem like St. Brown is too bothered by the deal, posting a congratulatory message to Williams on his Instagram account on Sunday morning.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Is One of the Biggest Winners After Jameson Williams’ Contract Extension
St. Brown’s message was short and effective as he posted the initial report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter with the caption “It’s up.” While St. Brown could have been talking about the value of his next contract, there are several reasons why Williams’s new contract makes him a big winner in the aftermath of the agreement.
The Lions are one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL, and it’s no coincidence that it hit another gear when Williams broke out last season. After catching 25 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns in his first two seasons combined, Williams had 58 grabs for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
That breakout helped the Lions lead the league with 564 points scored, but also diverted attention away from St. Brown, who caught 115 passes for 1,263 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns. The performance was also the third straight year that St. Brown caught 100 passes and had 1,000 yards receiving, and that consistency helped him earn a four-year, $120 million contract signed in April 2024.
St. Brown could use this new info to open discussions on a new deal after the season, but with Williams in the fold for the next four years, it ensures that he’ll continue to put up big numbers if he stays healthy. St. Brown could also benefit if rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa has an immediate impact, giving St. Brown more space to operate in one of the NFL’s most high-powered offenses.
It’s a situation where Williams is the biggest winner, but St. Brown is the biggest beneficiary who could look to cash in if he has another big year in 2025.
