The Detroit Lions' record might say 2-2, but the reality is far less encouraging. On paper, they should've won all those matchups, but in real life, they were much closer to 0-4 than to an undefeated record.
The Lions' defensive performance has been unacceptable thus far, especially against the pass. The cornerbacks have struggled mightily, and their once-stellar safety room has been severely decimated by injuries.
Fortunately, help is on the way, as the team just opened Brian Branch's 21-day practice window, and he just shared an encouraging update on Kerby Joseph. When talking about his safety running mate, Branch shut down all concerns about him.
Brian Branch is confident in Kerby Joseph's return
“He gonna be aight. He gonna be back,” said Branch (h/t Jeremy Reisman).
That's certainly refreshing to hear, and not just because of how tough the defense has had it in Joseph's absence. Not so long ago, it sounded as if the Lions didn't know when he'd be able to practice or even whether he'd play at all.
Joseph is one of the most impactful defenders on the team. He's one of the top ball hawks at the safety position, and his ability to cover the deep zone and flip the field has been crucial to this team's success. He would've made a huge difference through the first month of the season.
As for Branch, he probably would've gotten a contract extension if it weren't for his own injury, so he should have more than enough motivation to get back on the field and hit the ground running. With how much Christian Izien has struggled in coverage, the team would welcome him with open arms.
As bad as things have been for Kelvin Sheppard's defense, the Lions are far from done. If both of their safeties can return to play, which, admittedly, is a big 'if' since there's still no official update on Joseph's status beyond Branch's optimistic quote, they might be just one move away from saving their season.
Even when he was struggling, Terrion Arnold was better than what the Lions have right now at cornerback. But with Branch playing the hybrid safety role and Joseph thriving as the team's defensive center fielder, they might only need to trade for a cornerback to solve their defensive woes.
The Lions have a forgiving schedule and, despite their woes, can still put up points like the best of them. They only need their defense to hold on for a bit while the stars get back to playing shape. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later.
