The Detroit Lions' defense took a big step forward in the win over the Green Bay Packers. They faced one of the league's most explosive passing attacks and contained their playmaking wide receivers.
However, this unit hasn't been as reliable as the offense. And even if it were, even the best things can be improved. That's why they should definitely keep an eye out in the trade market to get Kelvin Sheppard some groceries.
With the Indianapolis Colts firing general manager Chris Ballard and trading All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, it looks like all their stars could be up for grabs. If that's the case, the Lions should be all over Adetomiwa Adebawore.
Adetomiwa Adebawore should be a no-brainer trade target for the Lions
Adetomiwa Adebawore went from being a rotation guy and a backup to being one of the most dominant interior presences in the league. He's blossoming right before our eyes and playing at an All-Pro-caliber level.
The Lions are finally getting their money's worth with Alim McNeill, but they could certainly use an upgrade over Tyleik Williams. Adembawore can become an elite pass rusher and run-stopper, and he's in the final year of his contract.
Despite his lack of experience, Adebawore can ball. He already knows he looks great in white and blue, so he could be a long-term plug-and-play addition to this defense if they want to keep him around for a bit longer– which they definitely should.
He's been one of the few bright spots in Lou Anarumo's shaky defense this season, amassing 17 total tackles (7 solo), three tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, 4.0 sacks, and one pass defended despite only starting one of seven games.
He's man-handling offensive linemen as if they were toddlers, and having him in the fold would finally give Aidan Hutchinson the pass-rushing sidekick the Lions have been looking for so long. With him wreaking havoc and penetrating into the backfield, Hutchinson might finally be able to finish more pressures with sacks.
The Lions have a somewhat forgiving schedule, but they play in the toughest division in football. There's no margin for error in the competitive NFC North, and with two high-flying offenses like the Bears and the Packers, plus the Vikings still waiting for their first loss of the season, this can be the season-defining move the Lions need.
He's a rising star, and the Lions can lock him up for years to come.
