Dan Campbell Provides Brutal Update on Injured Lions Defender After Commanders Loss
By Joe Summers
After 15 wins in the regular season, the Detroit Lions' dream campaign blew up in flames in a shocking 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders. Despite entering Saturday's round of games as the betting favorite to win the franchise's first Super Bowl, the Lions now must go back to the drawing board and answer a lot of tough questions.
This team won't look the same moving forward. The coaching staff stands to potentially lose both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, so many felt this was the organization's last great chance to win a championship with this exact foundation.
To make matters worse, head coach Dan Campbell delivered some bad news to the media following the defeat. In the midst of his heartfelt comments about the game, he revealed that standout cornerback Amik Robertson broke his arm and is set to have surgery on Monday.
Lions CB Amik Robertson Breaks Arm in Loss to Commanders
Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech, Robertson spent the first four years of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders before coming over to Detroit this season. He played the third-most snaps at corner overall though became a starter alongside Terrion Arnold once Carlton Davis went down.
Robertson notched 50 tackles and eight deflected passes on the campaign, surrendering a 61.4% completion percentage and 90.7 passer rating when targeted in coverage. He ranked as the 86th-best cornerback out of 223 qualified players at Pro Football Focus.
That said, Robertson saved his best work for last. He was instrumental in holding Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson to just three catches in the dramatic Week 18 win, appearing to be a key driver for a resurgent defense preparing for a deep postseason run.
Now, Robertson faces an injury recovery while dealing with the mental anguish of the Lions letting this opportunity slip through their fingers. He still has one year left on his contract and could be a candidate to earn an extension given his strong play down the stretch, so hopefully the injury won't derail any of those potential plans.
Lions faithful deserved better than this, as did players like Robertson and coaches like Campbell. Sadly, they weren't the better team on Saturday though have every opportunity to get back to the NFC Championship in 2025.
In the meantime, here's hoping Robertson has a swift recovery and that the surgery is a success.
