Dan Campbell's Wife Shares Heartbreaking Social Media Post After Lions' Playoff Loss
By Joe Summers
The Detroit Lions' 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders was unexpected for many reasons, and it seems clear that the entire organization and city are devastated by the defeat.
While this felt like the year that the Lions would finally get over the hump and compete for the franchise's first Super Bowl, things instead ended up in flames. Now, the Lions have a long offseason ahead with many key decisions both regarding the coaching staff and roster.
Head coach Dan Campbell was clearly feeling the weight of the loss during his postgame remarks. Now, his wife has shared a heartbreaking post on social media confirming just how much this one hurts.
As Holly Campbell wrote, "This season was a dream and nobody wanted it to end." Perhaps even more significantly, no one expected it to end like this.
The Lions were the largest favorite of the weekend, though a leaky defense filled with injuries couldn't keep pace with phenom rookie QB Jayden Daniels and an explosive Commanders offense. When you compound a poor defensive effort with five turnovers, four of which came from QB Jared Goff, you lose games.
That Detroit still scored 31 points is impressive. If you take the turnovers away, the Lions probably win despite the terrible performance on defense. Goff had mostly done a great job of protecting the football, though it became clear that the pressure hurt the Lions. Having Jameson Williams throw a trick pass in the fourth quarter, which resulted in an interception to essentially seal the game, was the perfect example.
It felt like this was Detroit's best chance, but the organization has a strong foundation that will compete for years to come. Loses like this sting and everyone should be sad, yet this season still proved that the Lions are here to stay. You don't win 15 games by accident, after all.
Even still, there are changes on the horizon. Both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn could take head coaching jobs, so perhaps the pain felt throughout the Campbell family is representative of a realization that this was this specific group's last shot.
The Lions will rise again, though the heartbreak from this loss is obviously going to bet felt for a long time.
