Defender Predicted to be Traded is Perfect Lions Target This Offseason
The Detroit Lions are laser-focused on the playoffs. As the No. 1 seed in the NFC, they had a first-round bye as the Wild Card Round games went down this weekend.
In the Divisional Round, the Lions will be hosting the sixth-seeded Washington Commanders. The sole focus for the people in Detroit is advancing in the postseason. While that's happening with the Lions, speculation around the offseason has begun.
ESPN's staff released an article discussing free agency, draft, and other predictions for all 32 teams in the league.
Lions Rumors: Detroit Could Have Opportunity to Bppst Secondary
Benjamin Solak was discussing his biggest prediction this offseason for the Cleveland Browns and thinks they could move on from corners Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome.
He wrote, "With no contending future in sight, I expect the Browns to trade players for picks. Both cornerbacks Denzel Ward (who had an excellent season) and (who had an uncharacteristically shaky season) should be made available, and one will be dealt."
Solak named the Packers or Vikings as potential options for Ward but the Lions would be wise to jump into the sweepstakes.
The Lions could use help in the secondary. They traded for Carlton Davis in March but he's going to hit free agency. He's currently on IR with a broken jaw and may walk in free agency.
Adding a player like Ward would tremendously improve the Lions' pass defense. The 27-year-old is a four-time Pro Bowler and clear CB1. In 16 games with the Browns this season, Ward had 49 total tackles, one interception, and led the NFL in pass deflections (19).
In his career, Ward has 322 total tackles, 95 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and 17 interceptions.
The Lions' first-round pick is going to be in the back half of the first round. Sending that to Cleveland in exchange for Ward would elevate this defense to another level.
The Ohio State product is also signed through 2027. He would be a long-term piece in the secondary, pairing him with Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and Terrion Arnold. Once the season comes to a close, the Lions would be smart to check in on the possibility of making this happen.
