The Detroit Lions are getting ready for a tone-setting Week 1 against division rival Green Bay Packers. It is understandable that the blockbuster addition of Micah Parsons has garnered all of the attention; however, that doesn't change the fact that the Lions remain the most talented roster in the division. One that got a bit of a boost with positive injury updates from head coach Dan Campbell, per Lions beat writer Mike Payton. Both Mekhi Wingo and Khalil Dorsey are set to return without any concerns moving forward.
After an injury-plagued 2024 season, it is a great sign to see that what few players who are dealing with concerns are making clear progress. Fans can take a breath that this isn't a repeat of a season ago, but simply expected injuries that are going to pop up throughout camp and the preseason. This is especially the case for Wingo, who is needed size on the inside. The second-year defender gives Campbell, who said Wingo "is farther along than he thought he'd be," a great rotational option.
Lions Get Great Injury Updates on Two Depth Defenders Ahead of Key Week 1 Matchup
While neither player is considered a star contributor, it is important to add back to both the defensive line and corner positions. Green Bay is flying high after the addition of Parsons and wants to send a clear message that the NFC North now goes through the Packers. Detroit needs its full roster and focus to prevent this from happening. While Detroit swept Green Bay a season ago, there are major changes on both sides. It isn't just Parsons factoring in here, but coordinator changes and the ability for Jordan Love to start the season healthy.
Dan Campbell's roster needs every possible tool to hold off the Packers and grab an early divisional lead over the rival. Wingo and Dorsey are pieces of this puzzle, even if it isn't in a starring role. The bigger story remains a positive injury update. After a year full of frustrations, it is a needed win going into the season.
Dorsey is an undrafted veteran who has continued to carve out a solid career in depth and backup roles. Having the corner healthy and able to fill in is key for a Detroit secondary that has undergone major changes. The biggest being the addition of D.J. Reed, who spent the last few seasons starring opposite Sauce Gardner in New York.
There is a very good chance the Lions have majorly upgraded the secondary and the defense is able to take a step forward after last year's injury struggles. This effort is only helped by the return of both depth players as the Lions set their sights on sending a Week 1 message in Green Bay.
