If there is one position the Detroit Tigers could stand to upgrade in their infield, it is finding an established level of defense and production at third base. While Alex Bregman remains a speculated fit it seems the Boston Red Sox might be content to see if the team's recent surge can continue despite trading its best hitter earlier this season.
With this in mind, the Tigers are left searching for another potential fit. No remaining option makes more sense than the current St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado.
Trading for the star has likely never been cheaper, considering both the contract situation and Arenado's recent offensive struggles. Still, everything about Arenado's career suggests that this is the outlier, and his production will return. Having his experience in Detroit's lineup would be an incredible boost, the team should be willing to pay top dollar for. It is time for the Tigers to back up their record by spending prospects for needed upgrades. This is an attempt not simply to win the division or make a postseason appearance but to go on a World Series run that this fan base is deserving of.
Nolan Arenado is the Perfect Tigers Target
While the Cardinals are on the fringes of contention, the team has made it clear they have no intention of trying to win right now. The silence in free agency and recent drop in attendance speak for themselves as to where the front office is attempting to move. Considering Arenado's current contract and the team's direction, it would be surprising not to see his name consistently in trade rumors as we move closer to the deadline.
Arenado in Detroit's lineup is a fitting final offensive piece that gives the team the depth and experience it needs. The veteran infielder is an established elite defender and even in the later stages of his career remains a great defensive addition. Add in the offensive potential you're bringing to the lineup, and the reasons to target the veteran are obvious.
The question isn't whether or not the franchise should chase Arenado, but whether they can put together the winning package to win a potential bidding war. Regardless, it is a move the Tigers must attempt to make as an exciting 2025 season continues.
