While preseason games provide fans the closest look at their respective teams throughout the exhibition season, joint practices have quickly become the fiercer of the two types of competitions.
Detroit Lions fans were reminded of that fact on Wednesday. At the end of the team's joint practice against the Miami Dolphins, a former Lions defender got into it on the practice field with one of Detroit's top wide receivers.
Little post practice scuffle that is quickly broken up between Jameson Williams and what looked to be Ifeatu Melifownu.

Ex-Lion CB Melifonwu Starts Scuffle with Jameson Williams at Practice
According to Ben Raven of MLive.com, former Lions cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu and star wideout Jameson Williams needed to be broken up by their fellow teammates and coaches after the two got into a scuffle on the practice field.
A third-round pick by Detroit in the 2021 NFL Draft, Melifonwu spent the first four years of his professional career with the Lions before signing a one-year, $4 million contract with the Dolphins this offseason.
When asked about the incident, Melifonwu downplayed any ill intentions behind it. Meanwhile, Williams shared a subtle response on Instagram.
I asked Ifeatu Melifonwu about the scuffle with him and Jamo today. He said “it’s football.”

Perhaps it was just the excitement of going against his old teammates for the first time. Either way, the former Syracuse Orange standout was a little too amped up for Wednesday's joint practice session, and that energy led to what sounds like an unnecessary scuffle with one of Detroit's top playmakers in Williams.
Melifonwu was a spot starter for the bulk of his time in Detroit, starting in 14 of the 37 games he appeared in. Given the role he held with the Lions, the cornerback was rather productive, racking up 72 total tackles, six tackles for a loss, 4.5 quarterback sacks, and two interceptions.
Fortunately, the scuffle between former teammates did not turn into anything more serious as cooler heads ultimately prevailed. These joint practices are supposed to be controlled environments that prevent situations like fights breaking out.
Emotions always run high when facing new competition during training camp. However, losing Williams to a silly injury during a training camp scuffle would undoubtedly have a much greater impact on Detroit's goals for the 2025 season than losing Melifonwu would on Miami.
As much as Dan Campbell has to love seeing the fight from his star wide receiver, he has to be happier that the scuffle did not evolve into anything greater that took away from the purpose of these joint practices.
