The Detroit Tigers are marching toward the postseason and grabbed a much-needed series victory over the Minnesota Twins this weekend. With Detroit closing in on its first American League Central Division title since 2014, Tigers fans are raising the bar and hoping their team can reach the World Series for the first time since 2012.

With that in mind, you couldn’t blame anyone for scouting teams they could see in the postseason. A potential World Series threat has also come into focus after picking up a former Tigers player that was picked up just three days after he was designated for assignment.

Former Tigers IF Buddy Kennedy Joins Dodgers After Max Muncy Injury

According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, the Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed former Tigers infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers just days after he was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers, who claimed Kennedy after Max Muncy suffered an oblique strain that will put him on the injured list, will be Kennedy’s third team this season and another opportunity to secure a long-term job at the major league level.

Kennedy was a fifth-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2017 draft but was traded to Detroit before the start of the 2024 season. Kennedy played just six games for the Tigers before he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in June of 2024 and the Phillies designated him for assignment for the first time this season when Bryce Harper came off the injured list on June 30.

The 26-year-old found a temporary landing spot with the Blue Jays this month but was designated for assignment on Aug. 12 after two games with the team. While Kennedy will be putting on a different shade of blue for his next team, the goal to prove he belongs in the majors remains.

Kennedy has appeared in 60 major league games but has a batter’s line of .193/.288/.300 with two homers and 19 RBI. In his six games this season, Kennedy has gone just 1-for-12 at the plate with a double, a run scored, two walks and three strikeouts. He has never played more than 30 major league games in a season and is waiting for a team to remove him from Immaculate Grid legend status.

Perhaps this is the opportunity that allows Kennedy to stick with a team. But it also could just another two-week stay until Muncy is taken off the injured list.
