One of the more frustrating aspects of the Detroit Lions losing star tight end Sam LaPorta is just how much it exposed a lack of depth at the position. Since losing the pass catcher, the Lions' production from the position has cratered, given the fact that there was zero reliable depth, forcing the franchise to bargain hunt for a potential answer. LaPorta by far remains the leading receiver at the position with 40 catches and 489 yards on the season despite being hurt since Week 10.
The next closest at the position is Brock Wright (currently on IR), with 14 catches for 108 yards. Taking this a step further, if you combine all of the tight ends who have replaced LaPorta's snaps, they have combined for a total of 126 yards this season.
One could point out that this is due to counting on Anthony Firkser and Shane Zylstra as the current primary options. Promoted practice squad player Giovanni Ricci is currently serving as the third tight end. All of this combines to drive home the fact that the 2026 offseason must have the Lions make finding a reliable second option behind LaPorta among its top priorities. This is especially the case when you consider the tight end's injury history.
Lions Must Prioritize Finding TE Depth Behind LaPorta Before 2026 Season
Looking at realistic options for the 2026 season, current New England Patriot Austin Hooper makes a great deal of sense. The veteran has plenty of experience serving as a primary option in an offense or playing in a secondary role. It is exactly the type of piece you want to bring in behind LaPorta, a player capable of playing a role within the offense or delivering in high-leverage moments without bringing in expectations.
Another option the Lions could explore is Tyler Conklin, who is currently helping the Los Angeles Chargers in their playoff hunt. The veteran is a very willing blocker and has proven to be a surprising offensive contributor. Regardless of the avenue, it is clear that the Lions must make vast improvements to help protect LaPorta and provide Detroit with a fallback option.
This is helped by the fact that the Lions are an attractive offseason destination due to an incredibly talented roster and one of the league's more exciting offensive styles. Add in the fact that head coach Dan Campbell clearly is well respected by his players, and the Lions shouldn't have a problem attracting much-needed depth at the position.
Perhaps LaPorta's injury has been a needed wakeup call as to the importance of depth at a position that is often relied on in big spots after consistently doing the dirty work. No question, the Lions must make at least two impact additions in the 2026 offseason who offer reliable depth and take pressure off LaPorta, as he works his way back from injury.
