It has largely been a quiet offseason in the NBA. Due to the lack of elite players hitting free agency this summer, there hasn't been a ton of movement in the league's landscape.
While most of the transactions are done for the time being, there are still a few quality free agents waiting to be signed. Former Detroit Pistons guard Quentin Grimes is one of them, but there is no doubt that he will get a lucrative new deal after his breakout 2024-25 campaign.
Another former Piston may not be as lucky, however. Veteran shooting guard Alec Burks remains unsigned after spending last season with the Miami Heat.
Former Pistons G Alec Burks Waiting to Be Signed in Free Agency
After signing with Miami last offseason, Burks gave the Heat exactly what they were looking for. He brought instant scoring, largely off the bench, and hit over 40% of his threes, while not doing much else on the court. He averaged 7.3 points in 17.6 minutes per game in 49 appearances, but wasn't consistently a part of the rotation.
Burks is about to turn 34, and at this stage of his career, he will get a veteran's minimum deal at best and will be a deep bench option. Plenty of teams need shooting and scoring off the bench, and Burks is a quality veteran who can also be a good locker room presence.
Much to his dismay, though, his days of being an effective player on the court are likely over.
Now that the Pistons lost a few backcourt contributors this offseason, a reunion with Burks wouldn't be a terrible idea. The 14-year vet's time in Detroit was a successful one despite playing on one of the worst teams in the league, averaging 12.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game on 40.7% shooting from three in 94 games across two seasons.
While it's hard to imagine him producing at that level again, there are worse options for the end of the bench. Time will tell if a reunion in the Motor City is a real possibility as the NBA offseason continues.
