It won't surprise Detroit Lions fans which former Lions player is already making waves in the first days of OTAs. C.J. Gardner-Johnson was among a notable list of Houston Texans not present during the first day of practice. The safety was traded after helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl at the end of the 2024 season. This was after spending the 2022 season with the Eagles and returning to the franchise after one season in Detroit. Gardner-Johnson unquestionably made a lasting impression in his lone season with the Lions.
What makes the defender so impressive is also what can work to his detriment. Gardner-Johnson plays with a level of fire and intensity that reflects his outspoken persona on and off the field. At times, this can get in the defensive back's way or create unneeded drama. It is a blessing and a curse that has defined an impressive career. Reading between the lines, it wouldn't be a surprise if Gardner-Johnson left Philly and is not showing up to OTAs based on wanting a new contract.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson Has Wasted Zero Time Making Headlines With the Texans
There are two years remaining on the defender's deal, however, it isn't quite what Gardner-Johnson would likely get on the open market. It could be in the safety's best interest to hold out and attempt to get a bit of a raise or perhaps an additional year. After spending a draft pick to add the veteran, the Texans aren't in the best negotiating position.
It is a franchise that badly needs the energy and edge with which the safety plays the game. While the Houston pass rush has a chance to be elite, there are clear concerns in the secondary. The addition of Gardner-Johnson would go a long way in dealing with these concerns. The veteran is well aware of this and could be attempting to use this leverage at its most powerful.
The flip side of this is that there could be a simple explanation for Gardner-Johnson's absence. This isn't the most important of offseason programs, and the safety is only going to benefit so much from being present. It is on the table that this has nothing to do with a contract dispute, but is due to personal reasons. Regardless, it is a noteworthy story worth keeping an eye on as we head into the summer.
