The Detroit Lions lost both of their coordinators this offseason as both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn took head coaching jobs with the Chicago Bears and New York Jets, respectively.
While his time in the Motor City was short-lived, a former top draft pick was very vocal about his desire to follow one of his former coordinators and continue his career under their tutelage. During a recent interview with "The Jets Lounge" podcast, former Lions safety and free agent Jamal Adams made his plea to reunite with Glenn on the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2019.
Former Lions DB Jamal Adams Pleads to Be Reunited With Aaron Glenn
“I would love to be back with the Jets and, obviously, finish it the right way,” Adams said. “Man, that would be a dream come true, just to patch up that relationship and kind of make it work. Just come in there as a seasoned vet and give game to the young cats and help in any way, shape, or form I can. I know I can still play football."
"I’m healthy and I can impact the game in a lot of ways. I just need that fair opportunity to come in and showcase what I can do.”
Adams was part of the Tennessee Titans roster to begin the 2024 regular season but requested his release following being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list after seeing just 20 total snaps over three games. He joined the Lions just over a month later but only recorded three total tackles across two games before being released on New Year's Day.
The former LSU Tigers standout maintains that he is finally healthy and ready to produce at the level fans grew accustomed to seeing earlier in his career. That is all well and good, but age is something that is working against Adams as he will be on the wrong side of 30 years old this coming season.
There are no guarantees that Adams' plea to the Jets won't fall on deaf ears. If he can convince Glenn and the front office that adding him to the roster would be beneficial to the defense, then perhaps he will get a shot in New York.
Lions fans can say with certainty, though, that if Adams looks like he did during his two appearances for Detroit, then the odds of him latching on with the Jets, with or without Glenn's backing, are slim.
