The NFL is just a few short weeks away from the start of training camps league-wide. For the Detroit Lions, their rookies report on July 16, while the veterans report on July 19. The start of training camp is always exciting for fans and players alike because it's when practices become real football again, which signifies the season is nearing.

That said, there are still a handful of former Lions who have yet to land on a training camp roster. One such player is Detroit's former kicker Michael Badgley. Though Bagdley remains unemployed, his experience making kicks in the NFL should be enough to land him a training camp invite.

Ex-Lion Michael Badgley Deserves a Training Camp Invite

When Detroit signed Badgley to replace a struggling Austin Seibert a month into the 2022 season, Lions fans rejoiced. Before getting cut, Seibert hit just 60% (3/5) of his field goals and only made 1/3 40-49 yard field goals. Badgley came in and provided immediate improvement, making 83.3% (20/24) of his field goals and 100% (33/33) of his extra points in 2022.

The following season, the 29-year-old remained in Detroit but was the backup to Riley Patterson. However, Badgley did take over for four games after Paterson was cut in December of 2023. In those games, he connected on 100% (4/4) of his field goals and 86% (13/15) of his extra points. While he did struggle in the playoffs, going 1/3 (33%) on field goals, Detroit kept him around for the 2024 season.

Unfortunately, Badgley suffered a torn hamstring during training camp, which sidelined him for the whole season. This led to Detroit signing United Football League kicker Jake Bates, who impressed in 2024 and will be staying with the team going forward.

Still, Badgley has a strong enough resume to earn a camp invite. In his other four seasons, the 29-year-old hit 81.3% (70/86) of his field goals and 96.8% (121/125) of his extra points. Most of his field goal misses came on attempts of over 50 yards.

In spite of that, Badgley is the most likely former Lions to get a training camp invite, given how many teams hold kicking competitions during training camp.
