The Detroit Lions have turned into one of the best teams in the NFL and it’s bittersweet for players looking to crack the roster. An invitation to minicamp or the opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp could be the difference between joining a team that could make a Super Bowl run or one that’s tanking for Arch Manning in December.
For one player, his opportunity with the Lions has since passed but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to find a new home. While he was given a workout with an interested team, he didn’t come away with a job, leaving him looking for another chance with a new team as training camp approaches.
Former Lions CB Jerry Jacobs Turned Down by Cowboys After Post-Minicamp Workout
Former Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs was invited to a workout by the Dallas Cowboys after the team’s minicamp but he came away empty-handed as Dallas reportedly agreed to a pair of signings on Wednesday. According to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson, the Cowboys are signing defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey and cornerback Robert Rochell, but chose not to sign Jacobs after the workout, keeping the 27-year-old on the free agent market.
Jacobs spent three years with the Lions after joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2021. While he started 12 games and made three interceptions with eight pass defenses during the 2023 season, he failed to make the Los Angeles Rams after signing a one-year deal last offseason and spent the entire year on their practice squad.
The Cowboys could use some depth at cornerback as Trevon Diggs and rookie Shavon Revel recover from knee injuries. But Dallas went a different route, signing Rochell after he spent the past two years with the Green Bay Packers.
It was unlikely that Jacobs would have been playing for a starter’s role in Dallas, but it’s still a discouraging development that he couldn’t make the team. After a full year removed from a meaningful role, it’s possible that he earns an invitation to a training camp in the coming weeks but it won’t be with the Cowboys.
