Former Detroit Lions kicker John Parker Romo is in a competitive position battle for the starting job with the New England Patriots. Romo, who joined the Patriots late last season and signed to a reserve/futures contract in January, is going up against rookie Andres Borregales.
Thus far through OTAs, Borregales has the upper hand, which isn’t good news for Romo, who is struggling in the practice setting.
According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, Romo only made 2 out of 4 field goals, while the rookie was a perfect 4-for-4 on his field goal attempts.
John Parker Romo Is Falling Behind in Kicking Competition
This isn’t the first time that we've heard about Romo struggling at OTAs. Last month, the ex-Lion again made two field goals on four attempts between 40-50 yards. His one missed attempt went wide right, while the other went wide left.
Meanwhile, Borregales was a perfect 4-for-4 on his attempts. The former Detroit kicker will need to get his act together, as mandatory minicamp is next. If his struggles continue at minicamp, he might be on the chopping block before the team returns for training camp in July.
Parker Romo has had an interesting football journey over the last few years. The 27-year-old signed with Detroit in May 2023 after playing in the XFL with the San Antonio Brahmas.
However, Romo didn’t make the Lions' 53-man roster. They cut him at the end of the preseason, but he immediately signed to the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. But Romo only spent several weeks on the taxi squad before the Bears let him go.
Romo received another NFL opportunity, joining the Minnesota Vikings in November of last season and appearing in four games.
He made 11-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 extra points. It's clear that the ex-Lions kicker has talent; he needs to lock in before it's too late.
