The next month will be an exciting time for the Detroit Lions as their offseason program continues with rookie minicamp. The Lions’ 2025 draft class, undrafted free agents and invitees to minicamp will have the chance to make a good first impression on their new team and some may even be able to earn a way into offseason team activities and training camp with a solid performance.

But while it’s an exciting time for rookies, it can be a difficult one for veterans. Players who spent the offseason preparing for their role can suddenly be upstaged by a rookie and it could leave them back on the free agent market looking for a new job.

That’s what happened in the case of one former Lions playmaker, who saw a rookie take his spot before rookie minicamp began for his new team and will look to find a new home as the 2025 season approaches.

Chiefs Release Former Lions Tight End Anthony Firkser After NFL Draft

According to the NFL’s transaction wire, the Kansas City Chiefs have released tight end Anthony Firkser. Firkser joined the Chiefs’ practice squad on Nov. 2 after fellow tight end Jared Wiley was injured and played three games with the Chiefs logging 24 offensive snaps and 27 special teams snaps according to Pro Football Focus.

The 30-year-old began his career as an undrafted free agent signing out of Harvard in 2018 and spent four seasons with the Titans and one with the Atlanta Falcons before signing with the Lions in 2023. Firkser appeared in just two games for the Lions that season before splitting time last year with the Chiefs and the New York Jets.

The Lions are currently set at tight end heading into next season with Sam LaPorta ahead of Brock Wright. Detroit also has a logjam with Shane Zylstra, Kenny Yeboah and UDFA Caden Prieskorn battling for the final roster spot.

While Firkser’s future is uncertain, it’s unlikely to continue in Detroit, leaving one former Lion continuing his search for a new home.
