The Detroit Lions said goodbye to reserve quarterback Hendon Hooker when they cut him a little more than one year ago, though the team's former third-round pick could potentially end up back in the NFC North Division before long.
The Green Bay Packers currently have two signal-callers on their 53-man roster: starter Jordan Love and 37-year-old backup Tyrod Taylor. Green Bay traded former third-string quarterback Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins over the weekend to serve as the backup behind Malik Willis, another former Packers quarterback, after McCord produced a strong preseason.
As of Monday evening, Green Bay had signed 13 players to its practice squad. However, none of them play QB. That leaves a clear depth void at the game's most important position, and Bill Huber of Packers On SI suggested that Hooker could potentially fill that role during his age-28 campaign.
"The Lions drafted Hooker in the third round in 2023 after he threw for 6,080 yards with 58 touchdowns and five interceptions during his two seasons at Tennessee," Huber wrote Monday. "In five college seasons, he added 2,079 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. He was 6-of-9 in three appearances for the Lions in 2024. This preseason, he was 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) for 89 yards."
After departing the Lions organization in August 2025, Hooker has had stints with the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. The Titans cut Hooker from their roster on Sunday.

As for Detroit's quarterback room, the Lions head into the 2026 campaign with Jared Goff as their reliable starter (he has not missed a regular season contest in four seasons) and Joshua Dobbs as the backup.
Detroit cut undrafted rookie signal-caller Luke Altmyer on Sunday as part of the push to trim the roster to 53 players. However, it was no secret that the Lions wanted Altmyer back on the practice squad, and the team was able to conduct that piece of business successfully on Monday.
"Although he didn't secure the backup job, there certainly looks to be something there with Altmyer to develop on the practice squad," Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com wrote. "He's got a lively arm and plays with a lot of confidence for an undrafted rookie."
Dobbs joined the team in early August following the retirement of former backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Dobbs, now 31 years old, has appeared in 27 games across his NFL career, starting 15 of those (3-12). He has tallied 3,346 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes, and 15 interceptions.
