Mandatory minicamp is going to kick off around the league this week, giving teams a final tune-up before departing for summer break. Players will then return in late July for training camp.

The Pittsburgh Steelers just secured their starter for 2025 when they signed QB Aaron Rodgers. He inked a one-year deal that can go up to $19.5 million and includes $10 million guaranteed.

That pairing looked like it was going to happen for a while now. But it had been revealed that the Steelers had Rodgers as their third choice, and former Lions QB Matthew Stafford was a big reason why.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Pittsburgh attempted to trade for Stafford, yet nothing was agreed to. They also tried to re-sign Justin Fields, but he signed with the New York Jets.

Matthew Stafford Was Steelers No.1 Target at QB This Offseason

Before agreeing to a two-year, $84 million extension with the Rams, teams were able to contact Stafford in an attempt to land an extension. He only spoke to the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants in regard to a new deal, but nothing was able to be agreed too.

It also looks like he didn't have an interest in heading to Pittsburgh, forcing them to look elsewhere at QB.

They ultimately landed with Rodgers, but it's clear they have other preferences in mind.

Despite being 37 years old, Stafford is still one of the top 10 QBs in the league. Last season, he threw 3,762 yards with 20 passing touchdowns. The Rams made it to the Divisional round of the postseason in 2024 as well. Los Angeles was able to add Davante Adams in free agency and has the talent to make a run in the NFC.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh will have a 41-year-old Rodgers under center. In 2024, he had a 48.1 QBR, ranking 25th out of 32 qualified passers.

The Lions will get a chance to play against Rodgers this season when Detroit hosts the Steelers in Week 16.

He is 18-8 in his career against the Lions but this could be their last chance to get some revenge on a former rival. And they can thank Stafford for that.
