The Detroit Lions are the only team not hosting a mandatory minicamp this month, as they have four preseason games (Hall of Fame Game), which means they will likely start training camp earlier than the other teams.
However, the 31-plus other teams have held or are going through minicamp right now. Minicamp is a tremendous opportunity for players to build off what they did in OTAs, as this is the last part of the offseason workout phase before training camp.
It also provides veteran free agents a chance to work out with teams in hopes of making a good impression to win a spot on the 90-man roster. Former Detroit Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs is currently on the free-agent workout circuit after not playing at all last season.
Jacobs most recently worked out with the New England Patriots late last month and picked up another workout with an NFC squad.

Jacobs is the lone defensive back in the group, which could bode well for him. The veteran cornerback did not play in a single NFL game last season after spending three years with the Lions. Detroit signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL Draft.
The 27-year-old cornerback never became a Pro Bowler or All-Pro in his short stint with the Lions, but played well when he got on the field. Across three seasons with the Lions, Jacobs started in 29 games.
The 5-foot-11 cornerback’s best season in Detroit was in 2023, when he appeared in 15 games and made 12 starts, both career highs.Â
Jacobs posted 55 combined tackles, eight pass deflections, three interceptions (career-high), two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hit. The veteran defender produced a 63.4 completion percentage allowed on targets, a 96.5 pass rating allowed when targeted, and gave up six receiving touchdowns.
The Lions didn’t re-sign Jacobs following the 2023 season, as he didn’t sign with a new team until last July, the Los Angeles Rams. However, the former Lion did not make the Rams’ 53-man roster as they waived him a month later due to an injury.
If healthy, Jacobs could be an intriguing addition for the Cowboys, who already have a bunch of younger cornerbacks on the roster. The ex-Lion could give them a veteran depth option on the outside.
That said, with this only being a workout, he’s not guaranteed to sign with Dallas, as we saw last month with the Patriots. Nonetheless, it's good to see him getting interest as that’s the first step in getting back on an NFL roster.
