On Saturday night, the Detroit Lions signed wide receiver Jameson Williams to a three-year, $83 million contract with $67 million guaranteed. Locking down Williams before the start of the season was likely a smart move. If the 24-year-old continues on the trajectory he was on last season, he could be on course for another 1,000+ yard season.
That said, on Friday night, one former Lions receiver made it clear that he wants to provide his services to another Super Bowl contender. On Friday night, Allen Robinson tweeted, "No cap, Chiefs, I’m a free agent, I swear I could help y'all."
Robinson's plea to join the Chiefs came after second-year receiver Xavier Wrothy left their game with a shoulder injury.
Former Lions WR Allen Robinson Wants to Join Kansas City Chiefs
Lions fans probably find it laughable that Robinson is still looking for a job in the NFL. The 32-year-old spent last year in between Detroit's active roster and practice squad. In the 12 games he played in 2024, the Detroit, Michigan native recorded three receptions on seven targets for 30 yards.
Given the Lions' receiving options last year, Robinson not being a huge factor isn't surprising. Even so, the veteran receiver has been on the decline for the past several seasons. In 2023 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Robinson recorded 34 receptions on 49 targets for 280 yards.
In the two prior seasons, he tallied 71 receptions on 118 targets for 749 yards and four touchdowns. Robinson's decline in play came very quickly after back-to-back 1,000+ yard seasons.
Therefore, if Kansas City ends up taking Robinson up on his offer, Lions fans will be laughing. Currently, the Chiefs are expecting to have Worthy available for Week 2. However, if he is unavailable, then their receiving corps is extremely thin.
Kansas City would have to rely on Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee. If Worthy's injury ends up being more serious than expected, he could potentially miss the Lions and Chiefs Week 6 matchup.
In that case, Detroit would be in a great spot if Robinson is on Kansas City's roster. Nevertheless, Robinson has made it clear he would like to join a contender's roster again in 2025.
