With NBA training camp and media days around the corner, many teams across the Association are doing last-minute roster moves, signing players to Exhibit 10 deals, or inviting free agents to training camp.
The Detroit Pistons recently signed four players to Exhibit 10 contracts last week, as they will likely spend most of the upcoming season in the NBA G League with their affiliate, the Motor City Cruise.
Meanwhile, former Motor City shooting guard Javante McCoy has landed a new opportunity with the Denver Nuggets, who signed him to a training camp invite, per Vinny Bendetto of the Denver Gazette.
Ex-Pistons G League Guard Javante McCoy Joins Nuggets for Training Camp
With the 27-year-old McCoy getting a training camp invite from Denver it sets him up to join their G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold.
McCoy has yet to play in an NBA game, as he’s spent his professional basketball career in the NBA G League. Last season with the Cruise, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard averaged 13.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 25.2 minutes per game (14 games in the Tip-Off Tournament).
He also shot 56.9 percent from the field and 51.3 percent from beyond the arc on 2.8 attempts per game. During the regular season with the Cruise, McCoy averaged 10.3 points per game on 48.6% shooting from the field and 25% from three-point range (four games).
When he played his college ball at Boston University, McCoy shot 37.7 percent from deep. That said, if he wants to get to the NBA and secure a two-way deal, McCoy should try to sharpen his three-point skills.
Before joining the Pistons’ G League affiliate last season, McCoy bounced around, signing deals with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022 and the San Antonio Spurs in 2023. He didn’t play in any NBA games with those teams, as he spent his time in the G League.
Since he has already spent three years thus far in the G League, one wonders if the former Cruise guard will search for an opportunity overseas if he plays well in training camp/preseason with the Nuggets or gets off to a hot start in the NBA’s development league.
