The Detroit Tigers hit a rare bump in the road when they dropped a series to the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend but they still have a lot to be happy about. Owners of one of the best records in baseball, the Tigers are well on their way to reaching the postseason and should contend for their first American League Central Division title since 2014.

It’s a lot for any Tigers fan to focus on the present and how far this team has come in recent years. A former Tigers catcher may invoke memories of some lean seasons but he made his way back into the news when he announced his retirement on Sunday.

Former Tigers Catcher Wilson Ramos Announces His Retirement

Wilson Ramos played 12 seasons in the major leagues but decided to call it a career on Sunday afternoon. The 37-year-old hadn’t played in the majors since splitting time with the Tigers and Cleveland Guardians in 2021 but always seemed to have a connection with Detroit no matter where he was playing.

Ramos came up as a prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization but was traded to the Washington Nationals midway through his rookie year. He spent seven seasons in the nation’s capital, hitting .268/.313/.430 and made the All-Star team in 2016 before signing with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017.

The Venezuelan’s career achieved journeyman status when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018 and spent two seasons with the New York Mets before landing in Detroit. In 35 games with the Tigers in 2021, Ramos hit .200/.238/.392 with six homers and 13 RBI before he was released. Wilson signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers the following summer but never made it back to the majors, finishing his career with Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League and the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

The Tigers are in great shape at the catcher position with Jake Rogers and Dillon Dingler and will look to get back to their winning ways when they open a three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
