The Detroit Tigers are cruising toward a second straight appearance in the playoffs but there are some players who are no longer along for the ride. Detroit’s roster has had an overhaul under president of baseball operations Scott Harris and general manager Jeff Greenberg since the duo took over in 2022 and 2023 respectively and it’s left several former players looking for new jobs.

One player has had a tough time staying with a team since his departure from Detroit and found himself getting kicked to the curb by a new team after being designated for assignment last month.

White Sox Release Former Tigers Infielder Nick Maton

According to the MLB transaction log, the Chicago White Sox have released first baseman Nick Maton from his contract at Triple-A Charlotte. Maton began his 2025 season with the White Sox but was designated for assignment on May 10 after hitting .167/.286/.315 with a pair of homers and four RBI in 25 games. After accepting his assignment, Maton played for the Knights, but hit just .192/.354/.346 with two homers and eight RBI over 16 games before Chicago decided to pull the plug.

It’s the continuation of what’s become a troubling career for a player that began his career as a seventh-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017. While he made his major league debut in 2021, he hit just .254/.330/.434 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 86 games before he was traded to the Tigers along with Matt Vierling and Donny Sands in exchange for Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens.

A change of scenery didn’t do much for Maton as he hit .173/.288/.305 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 93 games for the Tigers in 2023 before he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations the following offseason. After five games in Baltimore, he signed with the White Sox last offseason but was kicked off the team in favor of some of Chicago’s younger talent.

At 28 years old, Maton may be running out of opportunities to stick at the major league level and his performance may give teams pause before bringing him aboard.
