Over the last couple of weeks, several former Detroit Tigers players have been moving around the majors as they try to find their next opportunity.
Earlier this week, former Tigers southpaw hurler Joey Wentz was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins, which means he’ll likely be seeking a new home in the coming days. The same thing happened to former Detroit infielder Sergio Alcantara, who was kicked to the curb by the San Francisco Giants last weekend.
Alcantara has reportedly elected free agency, which means he can now freely sign with another team.
Meanwhile, another former Tigers infielder, who was on the squad last year, has joined a new team after he was DFA’d by the Philadelphia Phillies at the end of last month.
Ex-Tigers Infielder Buddy Kennedy Signs With Toronto Blue Jays
Former Detroit Tigers infielder Buddy Kennedy signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, according to his MiLB.com player profile page.
The 26-year-old Kennedy was immediately reassigned to the Buffalo Bisons, the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate. It’s been an interesting 2025 season for the ex-Tiger.
Kennedy began the campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, where he spent part of the 2024 season. In 61 games with the IronPigs, he hit .283 with eight home runs and 40 RBI.
The Phillies called up Kennedy to the majors on June 19, but designated him for assignment 11 days later. Over that short time, he appeared in four games, but didn’t have a hit in seven plate appearances. However, Kennedy recorded two strikeouts and a walk.
After being DFA’d, the Phillies outrighted Kennedy back to Triple-A on July 5, but he decided to take his chances in free agency, which led him to the Blue Jays’ organization. The former Tiger still hasn’t had much success in the majors, despite playing well in the minors.
Tigers fans saw this last season as Kennedy hit .200 with a home run and four RBI in six games with the big league club.
However, in the minor leagues, he was a slightly improved hitter with a .234 average, three home runs, and 14 RBI. Things didn’t click for the ex-Tiger until he went over to the Phillies’ organization.
Nonetheless, Kennedy will hope to make a good impression on the Blue Jays’ brass and be one of their next callups if need be, as he still tries to figure out his role as a major league baseball player.
