The Detroit Lions have no shortage of former players to keep an eye on over the last half-decade as Dan Campbell put his mark on the franchise. One of the more interesting positions of overturn has been at backup quarterback, where the Lions have continued to search for stability behind Jared Goff. One former answer is current free agent Tim Boyle, who spent both the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the franchise. Now, it seems the quarterback's career is coming to an end after what was an impressive run.

Boyle was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Green Bay Packers in the 2018 offseason and would spend three seasons with the Packers before joining Detroit. Since leaving the Lions, Boyle spent time with the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.

The latest stop was with the Titans in the 2025 season, where he would struggle in the preseason and fail to make the final roster. This was a clear setback with Boyle having benefitted from teams carrying three quarterbacks and previously filling a practice squad position or the final roster spot at quarterback. Now, we are closing in on a year since Boyle was signed, and it appears the former Lion could very reasonably have reached the end of his career.

Former Lions Quarterback Tim Boyle Continues to Sit in Free Agency as Career Winds to an End

Boyle has 1,210 career passing yards to go along with five touchdowns in comparison to 13 interceptions. These are the only numbers that Boyle has put up since entering the league in 2018, pointing to what an accomplishment it has been to last as long as the veteran has. For the Lions, there is zero legitimate interest in a potential reunion between the two sides.

Detroit has Teddy Bridgewater as the team's primary backup and would be wise to utilize the third quarterback spot for a project player. Boyle is long past this stage, being a proven option that has an extremely limited ceiling. This leaves the Lions no reason to want to revisit the past and pushes Boyle towards the end of his career.

If the signal caller isn't able to land a role before the start of preseason, it is safe to say it is a forced retirement for a limited quarterback who simply made the most of his limited skillset. Even if Boyle is given another chance, it is going to be an uphill battle to win a roster spot after sitting out the 2025 season. There is no questioning that the former Lion appears to be nearing the end of his career after another failed offseason.
