As we enter the Super Bowl week, a bombshell out of Cleveland stole all the headlines. The Browns star and arguably the best defensive player of his generation, Myles Garrett has officially requested a trade on Monday. In his press release, Garrett revealed that he wants to compete for a Super Bowl and feels like he can't do that in Cleveland, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

When a player of Garrett's caliber becomes available, every fanbase in the league, understandably, wants their team to get involved. A bidding war is inevitable, and the Detroit Lions should certainly be exploring ways to acquire him.

Projecting a Lions-Myles Garrett Deal After Trade Request

Garrett's stated desire to play for a Super Bowl makes the Lions an obvious fit. Detroit is a win-now team that could get over the hump with a major defensive upgrade.

The Lions already have an elite defensive end in Aidan Hutchinson. Putting Garrett opposite him immediately makes the Lions the pass-rushing team in the league. The defensive line of Hutchinson, Garrett, Alim McNeill, and DJ Reader would be an impossible-to-stop group.

Garrett is currently under contract for two more seasons. The 29-year-old had signed a five-year, $125 million deal in 2020. His contract carries cap hits of $19.7 million in 2025 and $20.4 million in 2026. Considering his production as the best defensive player in the league, that can be considered a bargain. He will likely need an extension when acquired by his new team but the Lions should be happy to oblige.

The biggest issue in a potential trade is the asking price. Browns GM Andrew Berry recently said that he would turn down an offer of two first-round picks for Garrett. That was before Garrett requested a trade and should be seen as posturing.

At the same time, a package consisting of two first-rounds is probably the starting point in negotiations for Garrett. Especially considering the fact that the Lions will be a great regular-season for the next few years, their draft picks have relatively low upside. Therefore, they will likely need to add more, either in the form of a promising young player or more early-round picks.

The Lions have been focused on drafting and developing players over the last couple of years. They have done an excellent job at that but a chance of landing an all-timer like Garrett doesn't come around too often and they would be foolish not to take advantage.
