The Detroit Lions were quick to make changes to the offensive staff following the 2025 season, which included the firing of offensive coordinator John Morton. Morton was relieved of his duties by the team on Jan. 6, and just a few weeks later, he has landed on his feet with a Super Bowl contender.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Morton will be joining the Denver Broncos as a consultant for the playoffs.
Despite being let go, that didn't hinder Morton from getting a job with a title contender and helping improve his image around league circles ahead of the 2026 season.
Former Lions OC John Morton Joining Broncos for Playoffs
This is a familiar stomping ground for Morton, who was with the Broncos from 2023 to 2024 as a pass game coordinator. Spending that time with them and Denver head coach Sean Payton played a role in his ability to return.
After a disappointing one-year run with the Lions, which saw him lose play-calling abilities, joining the Broncos is a great landing spot. Denver is the No. 1 seed in the AFC and has a chance to win the Super Bowl this year.
Jumping back into that environment where he had a role prior is something that can help him down the line. Fans saw this occur last season after Robert Saleh joined the Green Bay Packers as a consultant following being fired by the New York Jets. He spent several weeks with the team before re-joining the 49ers as their defensive coordinator.
Although Saleh had a longer span to stay in Green Bay, joining them in October, Morton could reap similar benefits. The Broncos are led by their stifling defense, which was third in the NFL in scoring defense (18.3). Meanwhile, their offense could use some juice, as they scored 20 or fewer points over the last three weeks of the season.
Payton is a savvy playcaller, but he could always use another voice to bounce ideas off of. And that's where Morton could be helpful. He already has a rapport with the staff and players on the team, making for a relatively seamless transition.
The opportunity to join this staff is a blessing for Morton and could help him land his next job. The NFL is all about having connections, and it's clear that's what Morton leaned on to get this gig.
While the Lions are home watching the playoffs, Morton will be helping the Broncos and has a chance to assist this team in some way as they fight to make the Super Bowl.
