The Detroit Lions finished the 2025 NFL Draft having added seven rookies. While it wasn't surprising to see GM Brad Holmes bolstering the trenches with two defensive linemen and two offensive linemen, ignoring the pass rush entirely was unexpected.

Despite the widespread consensus of Detroit's obvious need at the EDGE, the Lions haven't addressed the position so far. The lack of free agent signings was understandable, as good pass rushers don't become available and generally require an overpay. That is why many thought that the Lions would use one of their early draft picks to select a starter across from Aidan Hutchinson.

This increases the likelihood of a Za'Darius Smith return.

Chances of a Za'Darius Smith Return in Detroit Went Up After the Draft

After being acquired by the Browns in a midseason trade, Smith performed well in his stint with the Lions. The 32-year-old defender had four sacks, three tackles for loss, and 10 QB hits in eight games for the Lions, proving that he could still perform at a high level.

This production still couldn't prevent Smith from getting released by the Lions after the season. Detroit ended up saving some money against the cap in the process, but there have been rumors swirling around that there is mutual interest between the sides for a reunion.

Smith has spent time during the offseason in Detroit and remains unsigned despite being one of the best free agents left on the market.

Joining the Lions would not only give Smith a chance to start and play a large role, but he would also have an opportunity to finally win a Super Bowl in his 11th season in the league. Considering how Detroit will likely not be able to find a better option at this point in the offseason, it would behoove them to ensure Smith returns for the 2025 campaign.
