The Detroit Lions' preseason efforts continued in a 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, and there were plenty of takeaways, both positive and negative, with just one more exhibition contest scheduled before Week 1.
Jared Goff didn't suit up once again, as his spot is secure as the starting quarterback. Who will serve as his primary backup has been a major storyline, however, with both veteran Kyle Allen and 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker battling in the preseason.
Based on comments from head coach Dan Campbell following the contest, it looks like his mind is already made up, and he knows who won the job.
Dan Campbell on backup QB job:

“He’s playing better,” Campbell said of Allen after the game. “I would say right now if you had to go in with a No. 2 (quarterback) right now who would you trust more? Yeah, I would trust Kyle more because he’s proven more after these two games.”
Dan Campbell Reveals Kyle Allen Has Firm Lead in Backup QB Battle
Allen is "playing better," Campbell said in reference to the competition. "I would say right now if you had to go in with a No. 2 (quarterback) right now who would you trust me? Yeah, I would trust Kyle more because he's proven more after these two games."
It's hard to argue with that assessment. After struggling in the Hall of Fame game, Allen is on a heater. In his last two games combined, he's completed 21 of 25 passes (84%) for 244 yards and four TDs with no interceptions. Compare that to Hooker, who is 13 of 23 for 99 yards, no TDs and one interception in that same two-week stretch, and it's easy to see why Campbell trusts Allen more.
The 29-year-old is entering his seventh season after spending time with the Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He's the definition of a journeyman, but perhaps has found himself a true home in which to grow and develop. Detroit has found plenty of diamonds in the rough before, and based on this early preseason work, Allen may be another one.
There's one more chance for the coaching staff to get a look at these guys coming up on Saturday against a vaunted Houston Texans defense. Campbell said that Hooker may get the majority of snaps next week, but barring a meltdown from Allen, it looks like this position battle is over.
"He's done a good job," Campbell continued of Allen. "I do have faith in him."
It's warranted faith thus far. While the Lions obviously hope they never have to use Allen in a meaningful game, it's good to know that Goff has a capable backup behind him in case of emergency.
