There's a new Sheriff in Minnesota. The Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year "prove it" deal after the Arizona Cardinals gave up on him, and while the rest of the NFC North should be on notice, it's not like he's been great in recent years.

However, he's clearly better than whatever Minnesota has with J.J. McCarthy, and they know it. In fact, Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer just reported that head coach Kevin O'Connell told Murray that he could be their starting quarterback for years to come while recruiting the QB to town.

"And while Murray still has to win the job from McCarthy, what O’Connell said to Murray did stick with him—that he was the one guy on the market that they could see as a potential longer-range answer, rather than a one-year Band-Aid," Breer wrote.

The Lions Can Only Rejoice at the Vikings' J.J. McCarthy Gaffe

Granted, McCarthy got the best of the Lions last season, so maybe they don't have the higher ground to make fun of him. That said, the fact that a divisional rival gave up valuable assets to trade up and waste a top-ten pick will always be a reason to celebrate.

The Vikings are now left scrambling with a former No. 1 pick who has failed to establish himself as an elite player. Murray is short, injury-prone, and comes with major character and work ethic red flags, in addition to a one-year rental. Despite all that, the Vikings would still rather have him take the field instead of their former No. 10 pick.

That should all but shut the door on McCarthy in Minnesota. Even if Murray leaves after one year, it's going to be hard for McCarthy to come back from that. His head coach clearly doesn't believe in him, and the front office was quick to move on from him as soon as former GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah left the building.

The NFC North has a valid case for being the toughest and most stacked division in professional football. As such, the Lions have to celebrate every edge they can get over any of their divisional rivals, whether it's minor or major.

Dan Campbell's team will be under a ton of pressure next season after such a disappointing campaign in 2025. They have all the resources they need to get back to the mountaintop, and while facing Kyler Murray poses a greater challenge, he didn't do much to keep his job with the team that drafted him, either.
