The Detroit Lions are looking for depth this offseason, and one of the biggest areas is in the secondary. The statuses of starting safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch are up in the air for the 2026 season, and Detroit made one of its first moves to address the issue when it signed Christian Izien to a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The price comes as cheap insurance, but it may have also been a bargain compared to what Izien brings to the table. A former spot starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Izien has shown an ability to carry the load, and he may already give Detroit a win early in free agency.

Lions’ Christian Izien Signing Could Carry Long-Term Benefits

The Lions needed some depth this offseason due to the status of Joseph and Branch. Joseph is dealing with a chronic knee condition that limited him to six games a year ago and may never be 100 percent. Branch also could miss the entire 2026 season after tearing his Achilles tendon last December, putting pressure on the Lions to fill one or both roles going into the upcoming campaign.

While the Lions got some solid play out of Avonte Maddox as a backup safety, Izien may represent an upgrade. Izien has shown he can make an impact in his three years in the NFL. A former UDFA out of Rutgers, Izien logged a 67.7 Pro Football Focus grade while making 65 total tackles, three tackles for loss, with a pair of interceptions and two pass defenses in his rookie season in 2023.

Izien got a taste of starting in his second season with the Buccaneers, but while he logged a career-high 75 total tackles, the impact plays weren’t there as he logged four tackles for loss with an interception and three pass defenses.

Last year was Izien’s most difficult season as he returned to a reserve role, logging a career-low 167 defensive snaps with a 51.3 overall grade, before a pectoral injury last December ended his season. But after the Bucs declined the right to offer him a tender for the upcoming season, Izien felt as if Detroit was a perfect fit because of its need in the secondary.

“I was looking for one, a home, somewhere I felt comfortable coming in every day and playing football,” Izien said via Will Burchfield of 97.1 The Ticket this week. “A coaching staff that believed in me. A city that loves football. I believe I found all of that in Detroit.”

The Lions staff clearly believes in Izien, knowing they may need him to start next season, and it could provide a long-term benefit to Detroit. If he plays as he did in his rookie season, the Lions could view Izien as a piece for the future and could ultimately decide not to pay Branch when his contract expires next year. It’s also possible Joseph’s knee never heals, and Izien could be part of the solution on the back end in that scenario.

For $2 million, it’s a price that allows the Lions to roll the dice, and there’s a good chance that Izien could make them look good if he performs to his capabilities.
