The Lions are unfortunately preparing for a massive coach exodus following this season but fortunately, Detroit seemingly already has a plan for a replacement at a marquee position.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn isn't quite as coveted as his offensive counterpart, Ben Johnson, though he's still on the short list of top contenders to land a head coaching job. In new comments made to the media, Glenn revealed he's already been preparing the Lions' eventual future defensive leader.

Inside linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard, who spent seven years in the NFL, has been shadowing Glenn and getting ready for the opportunity once it presents itself.

Lions DC Aaron Glenn Reveals He's Preparing LB Coach Kelvin Sheppard to Be His Replacement

Sheppard is in his fourth season with the organization and third overseeing the entire linebacking group. Despite Aidan Hutchinson's injury, the Lions' defense has remained among the league's scariest thanks in large part to strong linebacker play.

Jack Campbell is among the NFL's leaders in tackles and overall, this unit has been a force to be reckoned with. Glenn is in his fourth year himself as the defensive coordinator. He has over 25 years of experience in the league and has earned his opportunity to finally lead a team.

Poorly ran organizations may not have contingency plans in place. This is not your parents' Detroit franchise though, and Glenn's comments should be music to everyone's ears. Whether or not Glenn actually does receive a head coaching opportunity this offseason, that he's already identified a replacement showcases his leadership.

It also showcases how determined he is to ultimately leave. The Lions have built something special under Dan Campbell, justifiably the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl for the first time ever. If they pull it off, Glenn and the entire coaching staff may be the largest reason why.

To Sheppard's credit, he's done a fantastic job developing his players. Alex Anzalone has enjoyed career seasons over the last two years and even Malcolm Rodriguez has found success under the rising coach.

This is a team and locker room with fantastic culture. Glenn's preparations speak to that fact and no matter what happens for the rest of the season, fans can feel comfortable knowing the players are in great hands.
