Lions Get Huge David Montgomery Injury News in Week 16
By Jovan Alford
Detroit Lions fans have been holding their breath this week to see if veteran running back David Montgomery will play again this season. Montgomery suffered an MCL injury in last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, which was feared to be season-ending.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Montgomery was seeking a second and third opinion as the Lions haven’t put him on injured reserve. Detroit will not have the veteran running back for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears as they will lean on the trio of Jahmyr Gibbs, Craig Reynolds, and rookie Sione Vaki.
However, based on the latest reporting out of Detroit, Montgomery might return after all and help the Lions reach their ultimate goal.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Montgomery spent the last few days consulting with medical experts, and sources are optimistic that he avoided season-ending surgery, which was initially feared.
The NFL insider also adds that the veteran running back will rehab with the hope he can return at some point in the postseason.
This is an excellent update if you are a Lions fan or a part of the coaching staff. The 27-year-old running back has played a huge part in Detroit’s ground attack this season.
The Lions are averaging 143.7 rushing yards per game (sixth in the NFL) and are ranked third in rushing touchdowns (23) behind the Philadelphia Eagles (26) and Buffalo Bills (28).
Montgomery has taken a backseat to second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs this season but still has managed 775 rushing yards and 12 scores on 185 carries.
Last season, the former Bears running back had 1,015 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. This season, the veteran running back has also been utilized in the Lions’ passing game, posting 36 receptions (38 targets) for 341 yards.
Detroit will miss Montgomery’s presence on the field for these next few weeks. But if the Lions can capture the No. 1 seed in the NFC, it will give them a much-needed bye to hopefully get some of their injured players back on the field.
