Lions Make Huge Jared Goff Announcement Ahead of Thursday Night Football
There's a lot to celebrate in Detroit already this season. Lions fans won't be fully satisfied until the job is done and a Super Bowl is won, but this has already been the best season in Lions history. Accordingly, the team is getting a ton of recognition in ways we're not used to seeing.
FanDuel Sportsbook has the Lions as favorites to win the Super Bowl (+290), Dan Campbell is the favorite to win Coach of the Year (+145) and Jared Goff is fifth in the MVP odds (+1500). And now Goff is also nominated for another prestigious end-of-season award.
Lions News; Jared Goff Earns Walter Payton Man of the Year Nominee for 2024
The Lions announced on Thursday, just hours before a crucial TNF showdown with the Green Bay Packers, that Goff is the team's nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award in 2024.
The award recognizes NFL players for their "outstanding community service activities, as well as excellence on the field," and Goff certainly checks both boxes. Being an MVP candidate who is as involved in his local community as Goff is special..
Goff's JG16 brand partners with Merit to design and sell apparel that funds college scholarships. Goff's brand matches "100% of the sales, dollar for dollar", so a $29.99 t-shirt sale puts $59.98 into a college scholarship fund, which currently has 200 Detroit youth in a program that awards up to $8,000 in college scholarships for completing their FATE program, with up to $20,000 available over six years. Over 50 students have already been granted scholarships through Goff's program.
A California native who was completely new to Detroit just four years ago, Goff making such a local impact is easy to love. And of course, his contributions on the field don't hurt either.
After the Lions went just 3-10-1 in Goff's first year as the starting QB, he's turned the team around completely and has thrown for 2,982 yards with 22 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions in 2024.
He already ranks No. 3 in franchise history for both passing yards (15,240) and touchdowns (100), and by the end of the year will almost certainly have passed Bobby Layne for the No. 2 spot in yards.
His attention will, of course, still be on tonight's NFC North showdown against the Packers, where the Lions are 3.5-point favorites at home. But celebrating tonight's win will be even sweeter for Goff when he gets to combine it with celebrating his Man of the Year nomination.
