The Detroit Lions have already had an eventful offseason. After going 15-2 and earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, Detroit came up short in a divisional round playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. The biggest storyline has been the mass exodus of their coaching staff that includes Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson taking head coaching jobs but it’s also a good question to wonder what some players will do with their offseason.

Jared Goff’s plans won’t be as busy as they were a year ago when he was negotiating a four-year, $212 million contract extension. But while some players may be planning an extensive training program or a trip to Cancun, the Lions star revealed some surprising offseason plans over the weekend.

Lions Quarterback Jared Goff Considering Purchasing A WNBA Team

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported over the weekend that Goff and his wife Christen are part of several high-profile investors part of a proposed ownership group trying to bring a WNBA team to Detroit.

The area previously had a WNBA franchise as the Detroit Shock was one of the league’s charter franchises. The Shock moved to Tulsa in 2009 despite winning three championships (2003, 2006, 2008) under head coach Bill Laimbeer and currently resides in Fort Worth, where they were renamed the Wings upon their move to Dallas in 2015.

While the Shock are not currently in the league, there have already been moves made to bring a WNBA franchise back to Detroit. Goff and his wife are joined by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, Lions owner Sheila Hamp and former Pistons stars Grant Hill and Chris Webber in a potential ownership group and the league filed a trademark request for the name “Detroit Shock” on Friday.

The WNBA is currently in the process of expanding to 16 teams by 2028 and will welcome the Golden State Valkyries this season. The Toronto Tempo and an yet unnamed franchise in Portland will debut in 2026 bringing the number of teams to 15, leaving one expansion franchise yet to be awarded.

Goff and his ownership group seem to have an advantage in the process and if Detroit is awarded an expansion team when the announcement is expected to be made in 2026, he’ll become a growing list of professional athletes who have a stake in professional sports teams.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes currently is part of the Kansas City Royals ownership group with stakes in Sporting Kansas City of the MLS and the Kansas City Current of the NWSL. New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has a stake in the Milwaukee Bucks from his time with the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett holds a minority share of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Goff also told Birkett that he will consider owning a stake in an NFL franchise when he retires but players are not allowed to have stakes in a franchise while they are active. That means the WNBA team may be enough to tide him over and add a surprising activity to Goff’s offseason.
