After the Detroit Lions signed Troy Reeder on Monday, the training camp battle for the final few roster spots on the defensive side of the ball got significantly more complicated. The Lions had to make room on the roster right away, and on Tuesday, they made a surprise announcement.
The official team account said that the Lions were releasing defensive lineman Jay Tufele.
This comes as a surprise after the 27-year-old signed with the Lions back in April and was considered to have a decent chance of making the 53-man roster. It turns out he isn't even going to suit up for training camp.
What does Jay Tufele's release mean for the rest of the roster?
Tufele was seen as a nose tackle option for the Lions, as he has some experience in that role during his time with the Bengals. He hasn't particularly set the world on fire with his play in any of his previous destinations, grading as a below-average defensive tackle per Pro Football Focus in Jacksonville, New York, and Cincinnati.
Given the lack of depth in the position in Detroit, however, Tufele had a good chance to be a backup on the final roster behind Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams, alongside Levi Onwuzurike.
Detroit likely has only three interior defensive linemen whose spots on the roster are guaranteed: McNeill, Williams, and Onwuzurike. The competition for the rest of the rotation will be intense.
Chris Smith, Skyler Gill-Howard, and Mekhi Wingo will have a good shot at cracking the roster, while veteran Myles Adams and undrafted free agent Aidan Keanaaina will try to sneak their way onto the 53-man roster.
The Lions could also bring more bodies throughout the training camp to keep the competition alive. It is one of the position groups with the most spots up for grabs, so the Lions will not hesitate to get a look at as many players as they can.
Last season, Detroit had Wingo, Smith, and Williams on their 53-man roster, as well as Roy Lopez, DJ Reader, and Pat O'Connor. McNeill was on the reserve/PUP list to start the season.
This year, Detroit is hoping that McNeill will be fully healthy and back to his pre-injury form. They also expect a bounce-back season from Onwuzurike and a big step forward from Tyleik Williams in his second campaign.
If all of this comes to fruition, the Lions can feel pretty good about their depth and quality at DT. Otherwise, we could see another intense competition for playing time.
Unfortunately, Tufele will not be a part of this competition. Instead, he will be hoping to find a new team between now and the start of the season.
